Our department of 25 faculty, 374 undergraduates, and 167 graduate students welcomes you. Established in 1867, we have a long tradition of excellence in teaching, research, and service.
ASM Teachers Camp
In the summer the MatSE Department sponsors a one-week camp at the University of Illinois for high school teachers. Workshops are conducted by master teachers and participants leave the camp with classroom ready activities. The camp is free for teachers, plus they can receive continuing education units (CEUs) or graduate credit for their participation.
High School Visit Day
In October the MatSE Department hosts a visit day for high school students and family members. Visitors learn about the different types of materials, tour undergraduate laboratories, and enjoy a free pizza supper with students and professors.
Engineering Open House
In March visitors find out about Materials Science and Engineering at Engineering Open House. Exhibits in the Materials Science and Engineering Building are very hands-on with quite a few directed to children in elementary grades.
MatSE Mobile is an outreach program in which Material Advantage student members travel to high schools in the Champaign-Urbana and Chicagoland areas to promote Materials Science and Engineering. The goal of the program is to inspire high school aged youth to pursue an undergraduate career in MatSE.
Gender Equity Workshop
In 2008 the MatSE Department at the University of Illinois took the lead in organizing a national workshop on gender equity in Materials Science and Engineering.
