MatSE at Illinois is one of the largest materials departments in the nation, with ~600 undergraduate and graduate students. The quality of the department is recognized by peer institutions, with both the undergraduate and graduate programs consistently ranked in the top five in the nation.
MatSE faculty and students at the University of Illinois are making significant discoveries that will change the world, including self-healing materials such as polymer coatings that protect materials from the effects of environmental exposure.
MatSE alumni help our students in a number of ways—providing career advice through the MatSE at Illinois LinkedIn group, giving seminars to let students know how they used their MatSE degree, providing financial assistance, and proposing senior design projects. Innovation in materials is a key enabler of innovation in energy, transportation, information technology, and medicine; and plays a critical role in food, water, and the environment.
