Student Societies

MatSE undergraduates are encouraged to get involved in the student societies—it’s a great way to network and make good friends.

Material Advantage

The main undergraduate organization in the MatSE Department is Material Advantage. Membership in Material Advantage provides students with opportunities for scholarships and networking on a national level as well as automatic membership in four professional societies (TMS, ASM, AIST, and ACerS). The U of I chapter of Material Advantage organizes service, professional, and social events for members. Material Advantage general meetings provide an informal setting for fellow students to get to know each other. Additionally, past events and activities include national conferences, bowling, plant trips, paintball trips, and much more. http://ma.matse.illinois.edu/

Keramos

Keramos is a national professional ceramic engineering fraternity. At the U of I, membership in Keramos is open to MatSE undergraduates in all five areas of concentration who are at least sophomore standing and have a GPA of 3.0 at the time of initiation. Keramos members participate in the Materials Science and Technology (MS&T) national conference in the mug drop contest and disc golf contest. They hold social events such as a weekly wing night and end-of-year picnic, monthly lunches with professors, general meetings, play with clay sessions, and weekly study hours. http://keramosillinois.org/
